Saturday morning, May 6th,
2000, the Tug Valley Road Runners Club invaded Matewan to run the streets
of Historic Downtown Matewan. The Matewan Area Community Action Team
hosted the "1st Annual Historic Matewan 5K Run" for runners of all
ages. Forty-Five people participated in the events from the age of four to
seventy-three. These events included a 5K Run (3.1 miles), a 100 yard dash
for the children under the age of twelve, and a 1 mile fun walk for all
ages. Twenty-three runners ran the 5K Run. Randall Watts was the
overall winner with a time of 19:11:99, and Lisa Salyer lead the ladies with a
time of 22:52:58.
