June 10, 2000 the 1st Annual Hatfield & McCoy 26.2 Mile Marathon took
place between Matewan and Williamson. The runners started in front
of Food City in Goody, Ky and ran south on 119 to Toler Kentucky where
they turned left and ran across Hardy Mountain to the McCarr post office
and then turned left on State Route 35 and preceded towards Matewan.
They crossed the Tug River into West Virginia at roughly mile marker 12,
at which point they turned right handed onto Mate Street and ran through
the streets of Matewan where they had the choice of stopping at the half
marathon point in front of the Matewan City Hall at 13.1 Miles.
Those who continued on for the full marathon traveled down Route 49 to the
Williamson Coal House for the finish line of the 26.2 Mile Marathon. |
