Sunday morning
began with a unity service on the Buskirk Bridge conducted by the
Reverands Bo McCoy and Terry Hatfield. Following the unity service a
double shotgun wedding was held on the steps of Matewan City Hall and
officiated by Judge Mike Thornsbury. Immediately following the
wedding Governor Cecil Underwood spoke for about ten minutes and then
presented the Town of Matewan the honor of being an official "West
Virginia Celebration 2000" community. The Governor then began
the "Tug across the Tug", a tug of war event between descendents
of the Hatfield's and McCoy's. After the Tug of War the Governor
joined the people of Matewan for a Pig Roast Dinner. The evening
rounded out with plenty of entertainment on City Hall steps, horseshoe
pitching contests, driving range competition, plenty of water games for
the kids and genealogical discussions held at the Matewan Development
Center. |
